99.9% of us are self-proclaimed ‘control freaks’. Somehow we seem to feel secure in knowing that we are in control of every single aspect of our lives. I am the first one to say, ‘take control of your life’. However, in saying that, I don’t mean become so rigid that you don’t allow any leeway in any aspect of your life. I also mean that you should take responsibility for your own life and live in a state of conscious awareness.
So today, I want you to explore the power of uncertainty. Because uncertainty exists! We live in an uncertain world. Nothing is set in stone. And nothing is a foregone conclusion. No matter how much you believe yourself to be in control, you really aren’t. AND THAT’S OKAY!
Uncertainty is such a huge blessing. Bear with me here – you’ll get what I’m saying. Don’t confuse uncertainty with insecurity – they are two different things.
Why do I say uncertainty is a blessing? Well, because it opens you up to a world of possibilities. It allows you the opportunity to live completely mindful in a way that you constantly feel in awe of the next thing that crops up. Just give that some thought for a while.
Uncertainty paves the way to growth. If we lived our lives completely sure of everything, we wouldn’t be challenged on any level, on any aspect of our life. If we knew with absolute certainty that we would live to a certain age, say 97; we would find ourselves in the mindset that we have plenty of time. And whether you agree with me or not, human beings are lazy – a generalization I know, but for the most part, we are lazy. We will always try to opt for the easy way out. And if we don’t have to do anything pressing right now, knowing that we will still live to 97, what challenge do we have? There’s always tomorrow.
But, because we don’t know how long we have on this earth, there is a certain amount of challenge, or at least there should be. A certain degree of wanting to achieve various things in our life – become an adult, become a parent, become a grandparent, travel the world, learn to speak all 11 South African languages, learn to fly a plane, climb the highest mountain, go deep sea diving and explore the bottom of the ocean – the list can go on.
The very reason we are unsure of our future, makes our lives exciting – or at least it should! I suppose that there is fear for a lot of people, fear of the future and what it can bring. But the only reason that fear exists, is because we don’t look at our life in a way that we can see endless opportunities ahead of us. It’s so much easier for us to see all the pitfalls and all the negative experiences that we may or may not encounter. Wow, aren’t we rather pessimistic to say the least?!
There is great power in uncertainty – think about it! When we embrace uncertainty, it helps us to understand our fears. It allows us to work with those fears, rather than letting them control us. Because, if you think about it, the only reason you want to be in control is because you fear what the future will bring. And there is a false sense of security in thinking that you can control that.
Certainty can feel comfortable and demands very little from us. Holding on to uncertainty, limits our future, stifles our potential , shrinks our opportunities and precludes us from ever realising just how much we’re capable of doing. Again, think about that!
When you are faced with the unknown, it forces you to think more critically about how to manage change, how to deal with adversity and prepare yourself for the unexpected. And the unexpected doesn’t always turn out to be bad – you have to change that thinking! Uncertainty is more constant than you think. When you acknowledge that your life is always going to be filled with uncertainty, your path towards happiness will become so much more defined.
One last thing about uncertainty is this. Uncertainty kind of forces you to live in the moment, particularly if you want to feel in control. It makes sure that you become aware of all the decisions that you make in your life. It makes you aware of your behaviours and how they can affect your future, even within knowing that your future is uncertain.
So from today, embrace the power of uncertainty – that strength will get you through anything!
