Dark Nights of the Soul: Why Spiritual Crises Happen and How to Move Through Them

Spirit ConnectionNovember 25, 20250

Every spiritual seeker eventually encounters a period of darkness, a time when the light of inspiration fades and the soul feels lost in confusion, doubt or despair. This experience, often called the dark night of the soul, is one of the most misunderstood yet profoundly transformative stages on the path of awakening. Though painful, it is not a punishment nor a sign of spiritual failure. It is a sacred initiation. A deep cleansing of the spirit that prepares us for greater light, wisdom and authenticity.

The phrase “dark night of the soul” originates from the writings of the sixteenth-century mystic St John of the Cross, who described a time when the soul is stripped of its attachments so that it may unite more completely with the Divine. Yet this experience transcends any single tradition. Mystics, sages and seekers across cultures have spoken of similar passages.  Times when faith is tested, old identities dissolve and nothing seems certain.

To understand the dark night of the soul, we must see it not as the end of the journey, but as an essential threshold through which every evolving soul must pass.

The Purpose Behind the Darkness

Spiritual crises occur when the structures that once sustained our sense of self begin to crumble. We may lose interest in the things that used to bring joy, question beliefs that once felt unshakeable, or feel disconnected from the divine presence we once trusted. Life seems empty, directionless or painfully uncertain.

This collapse is not random. It happens because the soul is evolving beyond its previous limitations. Just as a caterpillar must dissolve completely before becoming a butterfly, the human soul must sometimes fall apart so that a truer self can emerge.

The dark night is a purification process. It burns away illusions, ego attachments and false identities. We are forced to face the parts of ourselves that we have avoided. Our fears, insecurities and unhealed wounds. In doing so, the soul becomes transparent, able to reflect divine light more purely.

Rather than seeing the darkness as something to escape, we can view it as a sacred fire of transformation. The old self dies so that a wiser, freer self can be born.

Common Signs of a Spiritual Crisis

A dark night of the soul can manifest in many ways. For some, it comes through loss. Of a loved one, a career, or a sense of purpose. For others, it arises as an inner emptiness that no external success or comfort can fill.

Common experiences include:

  • A deep sense of disconnection from Spirit or God
  • Loss of meaning or motivation
  • Emotional numbness or exhaustion
  • Intense self-questioning or doubt
  • A feeling that the old ways of living no longer work

These symptoms can resemble depression, but there is a key difference. In depression, the spirit feels lifeless; in a dark night, the spirit is undergoing rebirth. Beneath the pain lies a sacred process of renewal.

The Gift Hidden in the Darkness

Every dark night carries a hidden gift. When everything familiar falls away, we are invited to meet ourselves at the deepest level. Without the masks of identity, achievement or belief, we discover the truth of who we are beyond form.

Many people who move through this experience emerge more compassionate, wise and authentic. Their faith becomes less about dogma and more about direct experience. They no longer seek the Divine outside themselves but recognise its presence within all things.

In this way, the dark night is an initiation into spiritual maturity. It transforms belief into knowing, fear into trust and separation into unity.

How to Move Through the Darkness

Moving through a dark night of the soul requires patience, gentleness and faith in the unseen. There is no shortcut, but there are ways to navigate the process with greater grace.

  1. Surrender to What Is
The instinct to resist or fix the darkness only prolongs it. Instead, surrender. Accept that you are in a time of transformation. Say to yourself, “I do not understand this, but I trust that something holy is unfolding.” Surrender turns suffering into sacred participation.
  2. Embrace Stillness
The dark night often demands solitude and silence. Spend time in nature, meditate, or simply sit quietly with your emotions. The silence that once felt empty will, in time, reveal itself as full of divine presence.
  3. Care for the Body and Mind
Because spiritual crises affect every level of being, nurturing the body is essential. Eat nourishing foods, rest deeply and seek supportive relationships. Gentle movement, like yoga or walking, helps release stagnant energy and restore balance.
  4. Seek Spiritual Companionship
While the journey is ultimately inward, wise guidance can help. Speaking with a spiritual mentor, counsellor or trusted friend can bring perspective and remind you that you are not alone.
  5. Trust the Process
Even when it feels endless, the dark night has a purpose. Every loss, confusion or emptiness is preparing space for a greater truth. Trust that the light will return, not as it was before, but as something more radiant and enduring.

The Dawn After the Darkness

All darkness has its dawn. As the old self dissolves, clarity begins to emerge. You may feel more peaceful, authentic and connected to the present moment. The need to control or understand everything fades, replaced by quiet trust.

You realise that the Divine was never absent; it was working silently within the very depths of your despair. The light that returns is not external.  It arises from within, shining with the strength born of surrender.

Those who have passed through a dark night often describe a renewed sense of purpose and compassion. They see beauty in simplicity, grace in imperfection and divinity in everyday life. The world has not changed, but their perception has.

Embracing Darkness as Part of the Path

Spiritual awakening is not a straight ascent toward light; it is a spiral of death and rebirth. Each descent into darkness strips away what is false, and each emergence brings us closer to truth.

When another dark night comes – as it inevitably will in cycles of growth – you will meet it with less fear and more wisdom. You will remember that even in the shadows, you are being held by a loving intelligence far greater than your mind can grasp.

The dark night of the soul is not the end of your spiritual journey; it is the refining fire that makes your light indestructible. Through it, the soul learns that true faith is not believing in the light, but knowing how to see it even when all seems dark.
