It is more personal than the stars, and more specific than numbers or handwriting. Specialists even call it the “finest vehicle of self-discovery known to man”. Yet the ancient art of Chirology, or hand analysis, has been somewhat hampered in reputation by associations with the gypsy palmist and her crystal ball. Traditional Western Palmistry is so often to do with divination and with prediction, but don’t expect a Chirologist to look at your hands and tell you when you will die, or whether you’ll inherit a fortune – that’s the preserve of the fatalistic fortune teller.
Chirology is an evolved form of Palmistry, and an authentic counselling therapy. Hand reading is not to be equated with gypsies, caravans, crystal balls and fortune-telling, and should no longer carry the associated reputation of charlatanism and fakery. Chirology is the rich and diverse study of our hands and their correspondences to our physical, emotional, vocational, intellectual and spiritual selves.
There are differences between Palmistry and Chirology, two of which are the system of interpretation, and the ethical considerations. Palmistry uses an interpretive system based upon planetary principle, for example, the fingers are accorded rulership of Jupiter, Saturn, Apollo (Sun), and Mercury respectively. In Chiirology, an ancient Chinese Buddhist Five Element interpretive system is applied. Rulership of the elements earth, water, fire, air or aether are ascriced to the digits, shapes, textures, dermatoglyphics, lines and markings.
Each natural element has specific associated principles, and these are overlayed onto human nature, for example, a person with many earth characteristics on their hands will be stable, reliable, loyal, traditional and rather change resistant, whereas a person with a fire shaped hand and a fire skin texture is restless, energetic and creative. A richly textured vocabulary of element principle forms the “language of Chirology”, a system which alleviates the need to learn “the meanings” of many hundreds of possible combinations described in the majority of books about Palmistry. Principles of elements are easily learned, and form the scientific basis of Chirology.
A second contrast between Chirology and Palmistry lies in there being far more emphasis placed upon the ethics of counselling, another oft overlooked aspect of the craft. In chirology, a counselling model called “The 5 Realms” provides context. How to listen, and of how never to underestimate the power of the spoken word, as well as a structured outline of how to do a reading, is clearly defined for the chirologists.
Our hands are perpetually in use as servants of the brain, and are a fertile and receptive bed on which emotional, physiological, psychological and spiritual impressions and imprints are recorded and reflected. They are expressors of our selves, our will, thoughts, ideas and emotions. The vast concentration of sensory nerve endings in the hand are constantly receiving and transmitting information via neural pathways to the brain. The shapes, textures and markings on the hand are a map, or a printout of your inner nature, and when subjected to codeification and interpretation, a wealth of insight is yielded on different levels.
Besides indicating something of your psychological patternings, your hands reveal possible predispositions to illness, and with considerable accuracy will indicate your emotional state, your current relationship arena, and with whom you are most compatible. Also, by combining the evaluations of the shape of the hand with the texture of the skin, the working environment to which you are best suited can be determined.
Psychic skills are not a prerequisite for a Chirologist, yet perceptive attunements have a life force of their own and do develop regardless. Intuition fine-tunes with experience. In the constant systematic cross referencing of elemental association, increase of intuitive insight begins to emerge. Paradoxically, the more thoroughly the “language of the elements” is learned, and the more analytical and systematic the application of the theory, the more intuition develops, which deeply enhances the quality of rapport attained in a reading.
The touch factor is an unmentioned and enormously neglected aspect of the handreading craft. Other than within applied physical therapies, there are no dialogue counselling modalities which are as intimate as Chirology. The hands are gently held, making your session a profoundly nurturing, reassuring and healing experience
