We’ve reached the start of the second month of 2023! It feels a little like being shot by a bolt of lightning, as if being transported from one dream to another, not knowing how you got there!
Every morning I read Brent Lindeque’s facebook post. He’s always so encouraging and so in tune with how people are feeling around him and as I’m writing this article, today he was talking about taking a ‘vacation time’ for one-self, no matter how that ‘vacation time’ shows up.
For me it is about stopping, feeling, listening and then acting. And what do I mean by that I hear you ask?
When you feel like your life is rushing around you and you’re chasing your tail – overwhelmed by everything that you’re committed to doing, everything you want to do, everything that absolutely needs to be done! Stop! Stop and give yourself some breathing space. Take yourself out of your current space – go out into the garden, go outside and walk down the road and back. Move out of your office and away from your desk. Consciously stop yourself from thinking about what you’re focusing on at that moment. Switch gears in your head. It sounds like an impossible task, but can be achieved when you walk from one environment out into another. Stop! Give yourself a few moments to breathe – 10 minutes, 20 minutes, ½ hour.
When you find yourself in that switched environment – Feel! Connect to yourself, feel the beating of your heart, feel how your body is feeling in that exact moment, feel how you are feeling emotionally in that exact moment. Are you emotionally over-charged? Have you emotionally flatlined? Allow those feelings to rise up and become part of your conscious awareness in that exact time and place. Don’t let your mind wonder off to something else, don’t let your mind bring you to another emotionally charged place that has no relevance on this exact moment. Feel!
When you finally connect with what you are feeling, let your body listen to what it is that you are feeling. Really listen. Are you short of breath, struggling to breathe? Are you physically tired? Do you have physical aches and pains related to this emotion? Do you feel indifferent? Do you feel that you cannot focus? Just listen. Sit quietly and listen to your body, connecting into the beating of your heart, the flow of your blood, each breath that you take in and exhale.
When you finally hear what your body is telling you and you understand where your feelings are coming from, then you can act. Act in a way that is productive to you and everyone and everything to which you are committed. Keep yourself in that space of tranquility.
Then move back inside and act. Act on what you need to, feeling the calm that you have brought to your body and your emotions.
Repeat the cycle, it doesn’t matter how many times a day you do it. Do it when the need arises. Do it with everything that is going on your life, to ensure that your mind is relaxed, that your emotions aren’t heightened and clouding your thoughts and your body is relaxed and able to work with you to get through the day.
If you find yourself struggling to get through this process and feel you need outside help to understand how you function, what makes you feel the way you do, and how to overcome the overwhelming aspects of your life, give me a shout.
