The Moringa Oleifera tree, is a small tree that is native to India, but also grows in many parts of the world. Commonly known as the “drumstick tree”, the Moringa tree is hailed as the “miracle tree of Africa” because of the amazing healing qualities it possesses. The tiny leaves of this miracle tree has gained status as being a “superfood”, since it is rich in nutrients, antioxidants and other beneficial compounds.
Moringa has been used in Ayurvedic Medicine around 5000 years ago and thankfully has steadily grown in popularity throughout the western world. Moringa has proven to be a useful and beneficial supplement for many people. In this developed world we’re living in, one of the most obvious and largely ignored predicaments of modern society, is the fact that we are an overfed, yet under nourished species. The fast pace of modern day living has contributed to this problem, and people are increasingly looking to quicker and easier methods to sustain a healthy lifestyle. Superfood Moringa has most certainly come to the rescue, and is now readily available in many forms; as capsules, teas, ground powders and more recently as an Instant Meal Replacement, manufactured by Supa-Vite, a proudly South African Company.
These are a few of the benefits attributed to Moringa.
- High in nutrients:
As mentioned Moringa is a source of antioxidants and some vitamins, including; B vitamins, Vitamin C, Iron, Magnesium, Vitamin A, Zinc, amongst others.
- May reduce inflammation:
Certainly the most prominent benefit of taking Moringa, is that it is helpful in reducing inflammation, which is the underlying cause of many chronic diseases of modern times. The levels of antioxidants present in the leaves, has a balancing effect on inflammatory conditions. Blood sugar levels are primarily targeted when using Moringa. Since blood sugar imbalances have been linked to diabetes and other such problems, balancing blood sugar, may therefore be an important step for reducing inflammation.
- Positive effects on Cholesterol:
Many foods that help reduce inflammation in the body, may also have a positive effect on blood cholesterol levels. Moringa seems to be especially beneficial in this regard.
- Natural energy booster:
This is one benefit of Moringa that definitely appears to have a large amount of anecdotal evidence, and this may be due to the amino acid profile of this plant. Many people on online forums and discussion boards, claim that they have seen a noticeable increase in energy levels, from taking Moringa.
I will take this opportunity to personally attest to this as well. My energy levels have soared since taking the Supavite instant meal for breakfast, instead of my usual breakfast.
- Protects the liver:
Moringa contains high concentrations of polyphenols in its leaves, that protects the liver against oxidation, toxicity and damage. It reverses fibrosis and oxidation in the liver, by restoring liver enzymes to its normal level.
- Supports brain health:
Moringa supports brain health and cognitive function because of its antioxidant and neuro-enhancer activities. It has also been tested as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease with favourable preliminary results. Moringa has been found to normalise neurotransmitters➡️ serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline in the brain, which play a key role in memory, mood, organ function and mental health
- Enhances wound healing:
Blood clotting properties that are present in Moringa leaves, has been shown to reduce the time it takes for scratches, cuts and wounds, to stop bleeding and start healing.
- Can combat malignant tumours:
Recent studies done on patients suffering from blood cancer (leukemia) and other organ cancers, who have been using Moringa as a nutritive supplement, rather than a medicine, have shown amazing results, where tumours were sizeably reduced and patients reported an overall sense of well-being.
- Help for breast feeding mothers:
Another often cited use for Moringa is to help increase milk supply in breast feeding mothers. Moringa based products have been recommended as a prenatal and postnatal vitamin supplement for women of child bearing age.
In mainstream wellness circles, Moringa has become popular because the leaves of the plant contain more vitamin A than carrots, more calcium than milk, more iron than spinach, more vitamin C than oranges, and more potassium than bananas. A “superfood” indeed!.
If you’re wondering whether you should incorporate Moringa into your lifestyle, it’s safe to say, that it definitely couldn’t hurt. You will have everything to gain, and similarly everything “unwanted” to lose.
