Maya Angelou’s beautiful quote “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better”, has always been such an inspiration for me.
I often speak about the conversations that we have with ourselves. You know exactly which conversations I mean, but I’ll remind you here. The ones where we are just downright unforgiving of ourselves. Where we find fault with everything that we do. Where we tell ourselves that we’re just useless and if we just were better people, we’d make better decisions. Those conversations where we actually show anger towards ourselves because of something that we did or didn’t do. And of course, we always should have known better – at least that’s what we tell ourselves.
But when you read this message from Maya Angelou, I think it gives you time to pause. It gives you time to understand that yes, there will always be times when we make decisions that aren’t the best for us. And it’s so easy to see this in hindsight. So looking back, you can see that if you had known better, you would have made a better decision. But the fact is that at the time when you made that bad choice or bad decision, you did it because you didn’t know better. And that’s okay. It really is.
I say this because, we’re all here to learn and to grow as human beings. No-one starts out professional at anything they undertake. Everyone has to start at the bottom and as you learn, and put into practise what you learn, so you get better. That goes for your life as well. It’s kind of like the little child who learns that if they touch the hot stove, their fingers are going to get burned, so they don’t do it a second time.
We really all have to practise being kinder to ourselves. We have to be nicer to ourselves. We all feel unloved, at least from time to time, and if we can’t show ourselves love, how do we expect anyone else to show love to us. Please always remember that your energy exudes from you out into the universe. And by that I mean that your energy reflects how you feel about yourself and it is picked up by others. So if the energy that you’re putting is out is such that you are angry with yourself, that you don’t love yourself, that you think you’re stupid, that you think you’re not worth it – I promise you, that is exactly how other people are going to treat you. And that happens because they pick up on the exact energy that you are emanating out into the universe at any given time.
So why not make today the day that you start to really be kind to yourself. Take a little time to reflect on all the mistakes you’ve made, on all the bad choices and all the bad decisions. Then look at your life how it is now, and be grateful for those mistakes, bad choices and bad decisions, because you wouldn’t be where you are today if it wasn’t that you went down those roads. Think too about what you did and if put in the same situation today, would you make the same decision – I guarantee you that you won’t. And why is that – because now you know better.
