Girdles are indisputably the most spiritually relevant lines in any set of hands. These semi-circular, bowl-shaped lines lie above water (heart) lines, beneath earth (Saturn) and fire (Apollo) fingers. They are mostly curved, or they might show up as striated threads of lines, or may have a straighter, more angular appearance. These are, in traditional palmistry, the Girdles of Venus, and in the 5 element system of interpreting hands, they are called upper minor water lines.
Old meanings for girdles refer to base, unrefined traits. While Venus herself embodies love, joie de vivre and libido, tradition holds that girdles in palms are pointers to lust, delusion, escapism and debauchery. However, since the symbolism of the relatively more recently identified water-governed planet Neptune has been included in modern palmistry, it becomes clear that the significance of these lines pertains more accurately to the characteristics of our blue newcomer.
Named after King Neptune, the mythical god (Greek – Poseidon) of the sea, the planet Neptune is understood to represent hidden spiritual and psychic realms. Characteristics and traits which are resonant with this celestial body are idealism, inspiration, the dream state, as well as all that is subconscious, invisible, illusory, mesmerizing and hypnotic. Neptunian energies also envelop and interweave with trance, mystery, magic, imagination, fascination and telepathy.
Through the lens of the 5 element hand reading system, while people with upper minor water lines might well have addictive sexual desires and destructive orientations, any escapist pull towards servicing pain-numbing cravings is surely rooted in Neptunian idealism, and in spiritual longing. Self-sabotaging behaviors and spiritual quests are both driven by divine discontent, the void-like longing for greater personal capacity, the yearnings we have for greater fulfilment and peace.
As a sister line to its underlying heart line, girdles gift their owners with extra water-governed traits. Emotional sensitivity, compassion, imagination, empathy, romantic idealism and intuition are activated. Additionally, the levels of our palms are elementally graduated. Imagine 4 horizontal levels across each palm. The base level is earth, then water and fire and at the top under our fingers where the girdles lie, is the air level.
In their position up high in the air level of palms, upper minor water lines are also influenced by rarefied air. The girdle is like an aerated, refined form of the water line. Hypersensitivity of the person’s nervous system is aspected; nerve are air-governed. Furthermore, their air-influenced presence gives space for an analytical response in the person to their heightened physical and emotional urges.
For bearers of upper minor water lines, idealism, and her cousin perfectionism are intensely present. I call these the ‘NGE’ (not good enough) lines. Owners are their own worst critics, neither they nor anyone else can live up to their exacting criteria. For those of us with upper minor water lines there is a consistently plaguing restlessness and feeling of dissatisfaction, an empty incompleteness and a low-grade unhappiness with what is. The moment is seldom enough unto itself and disillusion, despair and despondency tend to hover nearby.
This higher heart line’s supply of aerated water to the psyche implies a conscious or unconscious spiritual orientation. Many people with this feature resonate with the suggestion that they are spiritual adepts who perhaps live in cloistered environments in other lifetimes. The owner may have wanted to be a monk or nun when they were young. Girdles are often present in hands of spiritual seekers, mystics, devotees, priests, nuns and monks who are committed to daily spiritual practice.
People who are attuned to myth, mysticism and symbolism and who have an aesthetic appreciation of all that is beautiful often have these lines. We find these lines in the hands of artists, therapists and teachers. Interestingly, often those who are into science fiction, fantasy and special effects often have this talent marker which is an imagination activator and an asset for writers and poets and for anyone doing work requiring creative visualization. The energies exerted by upper minor water lines in their purest and most redeemed expression would make for an open-hearted, visionary, altruistic and compassionate person, who quests for the exalted.
To interpret how owners of upper minor water lines use their extra faculties, we observe the form of the line itself, and compare it with the qualities of the main water and air lines. Clearly formed upper minor water lines show the person is imaginative, but with a poorly formed air (head) line they could be emotionally hypersensitive, easily overwhelmed folks who withdraw to be alone. Depending on the rest of their hand’s features, they might be quite neurotic, moody, easily hurt or offended and over-reactively touchy about little things. They might also have low pain thresholds and be susceptible to psychosomatic ailments or even hypochondria.
Girdles are catalysts for change. What is most significant about these fascinating lines is that they potentate spiritual growth for their bearers. Conscious awareness of the true source of the longing within for things to be better or different can motivate for the search for meaning and eventually help us to be happy with what is. In readings, girdles open a portal into a conversation that lead into how we might transform and grow. These lines suggest that only God will suffice, that our greatest most fulfilling connection is with divinity herself.
