In this series of articles I will endeavour to give you the tools and knowledge that you require in order to meet and work with your Spirit Guides. For those who have no idea what guides are, as usual, I turn to Wikipedia for a generalized description – thus : According to Western theosophical doctrine, spirit guides are not always of human descent. Some spirit guides live as energy, in the cosmic realm, or as light beings, which are very high level spirit guides. Some spirit guides are persons who have lived many former lifetimes, paid their karmic debts, and advanced beyond a need to reincarnate. Many devotees believe that spirit guides are chosen on “the other side” by human beings who are about to incarnate and wish assistance. In traditional African belief systems, well before the spread of Christianity and Islam, Africans believed and continue to believe in the eternal and ubiquitous spirit of the ancestors and the Almighty God. The ancestors are thought of as the ‘living-dead’, who continue to show a compassionate interest in the daily lives of their living descendants. Ancestor spirit guides are superior to the living and may include deceased parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, uncles or aunts. It is believed that because they have crossed over to the other side of life, the spirit guides act as mediators between the living and the Almighty God. This way of life is regarded as ancestor reverence, communication or remembering, and not as ancestor worship per se.
From my experience, our Spirit Guides are very high level beings. They have completed the cycle of the journey of their souls, meaning that they have lived through many lifetimes, in much the same way as we currently are. They have overcome every experience that they needed to for the advancement of their soul. They are now in a position where they reside with the Absolute in Pure Perfection. Whilst most religions do not believe in reincarnation, there seems to be a general consensus, across cultures and religions, that there is an afterlife, a place to which we return after this physical incarnation. Reincarnation which is also known as rebirth or transmigration, is the belief that non-physical essence of a living being begins a new life in a different physical form, after death. That is not to say that this is immediate. It is my understanding that the two exist together, reincarnation and the afterlife.
It then makes perfect sense, that if the afterlife exists and the physical life exists, and we are souls not human beings – that the soul exists within both these two realms. I have this wonderful book called How to Meet and Work with Spirit Guides, written by Ted Andrews and this is what he says. Because of modern distortions by the entertainment industry (movies, tv, books etc), misconceptions abound regarding this dimension of life – (referring to the spirit world). Many believe that contact with the subtler dimensions of life requires intricate magical and mystical processes. Many assume that all spirit contact is evil, contrary to the laws of nature, and can only occur with great preparation and even greater danger. This is of course, the stuff of fiction.
Learning to work with spirit guides in various forms is a magnificent adventure. We open ourselves to great colour and wonder. We can eliminate primal fears of death and birth by connecting with those who have come and gone before. We can experience the touch of loved ones beyond the physical and learn to transform mourning into celebration. We learn through spirit contact that we can never be truly alone, as there are dimensions of life that are open to us any time we desire. We tangibly realise the interaction of the divine within our life through such spirit mediaries, taking religion out of the realm of blind faith and placing it in that of experience. We awake our creative imagination and intuition and our lives are filled daily with new wonders and blessings. We gain love, support and grater energy for all of our mundane tasks and responsibilities. We learn that we will never walk alone.
Through proper spirit contact we are :
- Nurtured once more by loved ones from our past
- Encouraged by the support of angelic protection
- Tickled by the joys and wonders of the fairy kingdoms
- Mystified by the teachings of the ancient masters who come to life for us
- Amazed by the spirit power of the animal world and the medicine they bring to our lives
- Exhilarated by the diversity of life
- Confounded by the expanse of knowledge that opens to us
- Inspired by the spirit muses of creativity and
- Guided in all our activities
Through it all, we are free to be who we are – in any way that we are.
Contact with the spirit world should be a natural phenomenon for every human being. It should be something that just comes naturally to us all, but it doesn’t. For this reason, we need to learn how to make that connection, how to make that communication possible.
