People who are daring and willing to take risks, are so often seen as, and referred to as mavericks – kind of unorthodox and independent minded. Whilst independence and self-confidence in others, is a trait admired by many, there are still so many of us who find it difficult to display these traits in ourselves.

If independence is defined as being able to look after ourselves, then yes, we can claim that with ease. However, self-confidence? It’s really difficult to look at yourself as a whole-hearted self-confident individual. And why is that?
There are so many opportunities for us to grab onto, if we just have the confidence to do so. We aren’t able to see what is coming up in our future and therein lies the dichotomy. Opportunity resides in the future and if we can’t see into the future, how do we know that there are opportunities waiting for us?
I’ll get to the point!
Every decision that we make, is made based on our level of self-confidence. Therefore, if we are wobbly on the self-confidence or lacking in self-confidence, we allow opportunities to pass us by. We do this because we believe that we’re not capable. Or, we’re afraid of what that future may look like. You know the one, the future where you allow yourself the opportunity to bring about change in your life.
There seems to be two little voices that live with us – like two little people living on each shoulder. The one jumps up and down screaming at you – take the chance now, what do you have to lose! And the other shouts back all the time – what if it all goes wrong, you have everything to lose!
We’re always so worried about what other people will think. Or we question if we’re actually good enough to grab onto the opportunity as it presents. Are we capable? And of course you’re capable, otherwise it would not have been offered to you. And even if you aren’t 100% knowledgeable or don’t have 100% of the skills required, you can learn. You can allow yourself to evolve into that person that is 100% knowledgeable and 100% skilled.
But of course, you have to take the chance! In the end, the only thing that you will regret is all the chances that you didn’t take. Lord Tennyson wrote “Tis better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.” And that can be applied to everything in your life, not only relationships.
“There is no failure, except in no longer trying”, wrote Chris Bradford, English author and black belt martial artist. I can spend the rest of the day looking for these kinds of inspirational quotes, but I’m sure that you get the picture.
I encourage you today, to recognise the courageous being that you are. None of us are 100% self-confident. We all have fears of failure. But it’s those who are willing to take the chance, and the risk, and embrace an unknown future, who lead the way.
I have a sign above my front door that reads “The ones who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.”
Be that – be one of those. Don’t sit in the background and let life pass you by. You know as well as I do that when the time comes for you to check out of this life, the only thing that you will regret, is the chances that you didn’t take.
