I hope your year has started off well, and by now realise that just because the calendar says 1 January = New Year, it doesn’t mean it automatically and immediately feels like a new anything…yet.
We have gotten through January, probably in pretty much the same as we rushed and rallied through December. We have also just experienced the Chinese New Year energies on the 22nd January, which feel more appropriate for a fresh start – energetically and otherwise – to really start utilizing the 2023/7 energies that this year will offer.
I am also very definitely experiencing the ‘duality’ of the world and its own ascension process. Meaning that there is more of a divide between us as some remain fixed in the 3rd dimensional reality experiences, while others are moving towards living in the 4th and 5th dimensional realities. There are of course thousands of points on the scale that we can occupy at any one time and we shift ‘up and down’ accordingly. After all we do live on this incredible planet together and need to still function for a while longer in and across all dimensions – no wonder we are tired all the time!
I have kept hearing that even those that were fortunate enough to get away and have a break from the routine, are still feeling exhausted and unrested. There is a certain underlying malaise and apathy which we can’t put our fingers on. We have reached a ‘new’ year but are still on the same ‘old’ merry-go-round, tv series and diets.
As someone who works straight through the holiday season, I totally get it. I know I need a break, but sometimes circumstances just don’t allow that luxury. A holiday or vacation – by definition – can be defined as an extended period of leisure and recreation, especially one spent away from home or in travelling. Nowadays we don’t even give ourselves an hour to sit and relax without picking up a phone, some food or a kid. How are we expected to even know what an extended anything is, let alone an extended period of time away from our responsibilities and daily duties. I am sure you are also wondering, is this as good as it gets? Is it that we need an extra week away or do we need an extra pair of hands to get us through the days and leave us waking up energised and refreshed? Both sound like good options, don’t they?
However, what we really need to be looking at is not more days off or more relaxing activities to put on the ever growing list. We need to truly focus on recalibrating our calendars, minds and hearts. This is the only solution to this endless treadmill we are on. I have said this countless times, we do not necessarily need more rest, we need more restoration. We need to be conscious of what we are doing in our down time.
We need to realise that our bodies are walking or sitting most of the day – the majority of us are fortunate enough that we are not doing physical labour, working in the fields, or pumping our own water. If this is the case, then what we need to really come to terms with is that it is our minds that are so tired. Our constant internal chatter and thought stream is pretty much switched on 100% of the time, until we go to sleep and even then, we only ‘put the phone down’ because it drops out of our hands as we nod off to sleep. We literally are NEVER without some kind of stimulation – day or night, here or there, conscious or not.
What if we start choosing what we will consume on a daily basis? If we know our diets need a tweak for our physical bodies and health, what about tweaking our ‘diets’ for our minds? It is astonishing to think of the absolute nonsense and noise we are cluttering our minds with!
It is going to take some effort and awareness on our part. Start noticing if you feel better after having a quiet day indoors just pottering around the house, or do you feel better if you go for a walk and get some fresh air? What kind of book do you unwind with – a fantasy novel or an interesting biography or more self-help stuff?
Do you always need to be filling up your diary with coffee dates and outings, or do you find your peace with your pets and small circle of loved ones? All of these types of obvious but simple reflections will help you start unpacking what rest will look and feel like to you. One thing is clear, it is simply not about just sleeping habits, holidays and days off anymore.
You could be lying on the most beautiful beach in the world, but worrying about how you are going to manage the bills when you get back home. You could be reading a book for most of the day on the couch, but still feel tired as your mind has had to deal with plot lines of all kinds. And let’s not get into social media consumption – hours of memes, quotes, tutorials, scenery, food, politics or whatever floats across your screen – leaving you either foggy and headachy or wired or not feeling good enough because you aren’t out making or doing amazing things too. I am tired just from the thought of this.
If anything, the year of 2023 is asking us to slow down, jump off the proverbial merry go round, grab a nice cuppa and do nothing for a while except tune into our deepest being, our highest self. And wait. To become more mindful and aware of how we are spending our time, and what do we want our future to look like. It’s a great year to reset and tune into our soul and our heart and see if they are on the same page.
It’s time to log out of the chaos we buy into on a daily basis and take a little holiday from the unnecessary stuff we are ingesting. Whether a day without social media or an hour, it will all add up and pretty soon your energy levels will start improving as well as your mood and mindset.
Look at it this way, imagine your mind is a beautiful river of never-ending flowing thought, and you are continually polluting the river with all sorts of junk. Pretty soon, you will lose clarity, focus, and the flow will become a small trickle. And in order to function you will exhaust yourself trying to move around and over all the obstacles you have ‘thrown’ into the river. Not a pretty picture is it. And we wonder why our oceans are filling with plastic, our air is carrying toxins and our soil is depleted of nutrients.
We truly are living in Samsara – a Buddhist term to describe the cyclic addictive nature of our existence. Simply and sternly put we need to wake up and pay attention to what we are addicted to in our lives, what patterns keep repeating? And ultimately – ask the real question that gets us to shift – are we tired enough of these fruitless addictions to finally make a change?
