Ayurveda defines perfect health as: “One who is established in self, who has balanced doshas Bodily humors), balanced agni (digestive fire), properly formed dhatus (tissues), proper elimination of malas (waste), well-functioning bodily processes and whose mind, soul and senses are happy. This is a healthy person”.
WHO (the World Health organization) defines health as: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity,” limiting this definition by not including the holistic essence of health that Ayurveda embodies.
Ayurveda, like all holistic health systems, emphasizes the inextricable links between the body, mind, and spirit. The connectivity of Ayurveda, on the other hand, goes far beyond the individual and into the universe.
At its very core, the purpose of Yoga and Ayurveda is to cultivate a way of life that allows us to live as long as possible with a strong, sound body and robust immunity, and a sound mind in an effort to achieve Self-realization (Enlightenment/Moksha/Nirvana). As Ayurvedic Practitioners, our healing philosophy is built on striving to live a life of virtue, right actions, and a reverent relationship with the natural world and humanity as a whole.
“The closer we live to nature, the healthier we are. The further away from harmony with nature we live, the sicker we get”.
The therapeutic aspect of Ayurveda is essential for the treatment of disease and dis-ease. Ayurveda’s wellness component remains relevant to everyone, and it links with Yoga to promote holistic wellness. Yoga therapy (Yoga chikitsa – chikitsa means therapy) is an integral part of the Ayurvedic approach to healing the body-mind-spirit unit. The two are Sister-Sciences and work inextricably together. Every practitioner of yoga owes it to themselves to get a basic understanding of Ayurveda.
Ayurveda promotes preventative and therapeutic remedies, as well as purification and rejuvenation techniques. The first and best place to start is almost always by committing to some form of more gentle detoxification.
Ayurveda is more than just a healing method; it’s also a science and an art of living that promotes longevity. It can help every individual choose the right food, lifestyle, and exercise to restore balance in the body, mind, and consciousness, avoiding dis-ease from entering the system.
Every human being, according to Ayurveda, is a unique manifestation of cosmic consciousness manifested through the five primary elements of ether, air, fire, water, and earth. These are known in Ayurveda as the “doshas”.
Ayurveda strives to bring the body back into balance so that we experience boundless energy, stable, healthy weight, deep and restful sleep, joy, optimism and contentment (no depression) and live a long, healthy life.
“The main goal of Ayurveda is to help people live long enough in a healthy, pain-free body so that they have enough time on this Earth to achieve Enlightenment.”
