We have just celebrated another full moon, another month to go deeper into the mystery of our lives. Yet this was a special moon, also known as Wesak/Vesak Moon, celebrated by Buddhists to mark 3 momentous events in Buddha’s life. His birth, death and enlightenment. It is a time of year that many believe the earth is bestowed with an outpouring of Divine sacred energy from the Masters and their teachings. Even if we do not believe in any of these beings and practices, we still will experience the effects and outcomes in the next few weeks. To top it all off, a total lunar eclipse occurred within the same time frame, so buckle up and stock up on the candle supplies – especially if you’re living in South Africa at the moment.
There is actually a lot of irony and topsy turvy stuff going on if we look at the paradox of a full moon illuminating our paths, while actually being eclipsed and in shadow of that gorgeous eery reddish hue we witness as darkness transcends the planet. Our lives can feel very much like they are on track one moment and then the next we feel like we are flailing around in the darkness bashing into things, forgetting where the light switch is. And even if it not so dramatic, then there certainly is this undercurrent or gnawing discomfort that needs our attention. Something we need to confront, release or embrace. But we never have the time, or are too busy or it’s too hard to deal with and it’s much easier to scroll through Facebook instead of sitting in contemplation for 20 minutes.
I may just be speaking for myself here, but loadshedding in SA, where the power goes out intermittently at scheduled times, may not be such a bad thing after all – at least on a deeper level. It is interesting and telling how we associate electricity with the words power and light. The lights go out, the power goes off – all of these words and sentences actually hold a lot of truth for many, as once we ‘lose power’ or access to ‘the light’ it becomes a very distressing, frustrating experience for us. Our whole lives and worlds seem to revolve around ‘power’ – our phones, tv’s laptops, cooking, heating, kindles and the list goes on….
What if these moments are actually great intervals in our days to stop what we are doing and actually start to access the light within ourselves? The power within ourselves. Wouldn’t that produce far more benefit, than running around watching the clock until your favourite distraction or TV show comes back on? We all are guilty of moaning about never having enough time for ‘spiritual work’ or meditation, journaling or even therapy.
What if we are actually being gifted this time, like a time out in our day, to not schedule or do or distract ourselves, but to really just reflect, pause, contemplate and simply go within. We may just find we are blinded by the light we uncover, A LIGHT THAT NEVER GOES OUT OR RUNS OUT. That doesn’t rely on others, or partners, or jobs, or governments or social media.
What if we, like Buddha, leave the comforts of what we know, our own palace walls, and venture outside our comfort zones to really discover what life is about. How to live it and navigate the challenges we will all face with purpose and power – our inner power. This is exactly what he discovered, once he made peace with the darkness and suffering of the world, sitting under the Bodhi tree where he experienced enlightenment, saying – “Wonder of wonders, this very enlightenment is the nature of all beings, and yet they are unhappy for lack of it.”
We all have the opportunity to reach enlightenment, in many different ways. I think the key here is that we need to realise that we are sitting with the greatest power of all WITHIN OUR OWN BEINGS. We need to start using every inconvenient opportunity to practice sitting with ourselves in the dark, with our own radiant power. Realising we can switch the lights back on whenever we want. Or at the very least light a candle.
