My dear friends, what a crazy few weeks it’s been. Here in South Africa, we have been left wandering what on earth went wrong?! How could it be that we were all so focused, working together to eradicate this awful virus that has invaded every inch of our lives, and then suddenly the world for us turned upside down and now we find ourselves standing in line just to get basic supplies? Distribution to a great part of the country has been cut off at the knees and retail outlets are but a shell of their former selves?
I will be honest and say that during the days when the riots hit us, I was feeling really concerned. Concerned for my family, so much more for my grandchildren – what are we leaving for them to benefit from? And concern for my beloved fellow South Africans. Together we have walked a very long road since those long lines of voting in 1994. We stood together then and we’re standing together now. The wonderful messages of hope, love, support from everyone has been heartwarming and restored my pride in being a South African and renewed my faith that we can get through any challenge that is handed to us. I am so reminded by my guide and recognize in all of us, the fact that we do all want the same thing. We all want to be loved. We all want to be heard. We all want to live in peace and share this magnificent country that is the place of our birth.
The pandemic is awful. The rioting, looting, loss of life, destruction of property and absolute devastation defies words powerful enough to express my emotional reaction. But at the same time, I’m reminded that where attention goes, energy flows. And now more than ever, we have to understand that to focus on the negative is to give it power. To share all the negative messages just fuels the very fire that we’re trying to dowse. No matter how difficult, I implore you to show positivity in your outlook, in your interactions with everyone and to scroll past the awful negative news, but take the time to share the positive messages of hope and inspiration that we all so sorely need. And to really and truly try to be the change that you want to see.
We have walked through this pandemic for around 487 days, holding hands and supporting each other. Our businesses have taken huge hits, a lot have been forced to close. I myself have had no business since we first went into lockdown – video production for schools is just not a priority at the moment. Many people have lost their jobs or been forced to take a cut in their salaries. In my lifetime, even going through all the upheaval during the 1980’s (believe me the bombs in town were scary!), I have never been so aware of the tremendous amount of suffering we are experiencing as a country.
I ask you all to sit in prayer every night before you to go to sleep. Express your gratitude for another magnificent day filled with beautiful South African sunshine and camaraderie. Visualise us all living in peace and harmony. Visualise the virus becoming a thing of the past. Visualise us all living in perfect health. And start to live the life that you want and that you know everyone else wants too. When you find yourself, in knee-jerk reaction, saying things like this country is going down the tubes, will one day be like Zimbabwe – please – cut yourself short and take back those words. We forget how powerful our words are and how they manifest in reality.
My prayer is that you all remain safe. Safe from the terrorism that has plagued us over the last few days. Safe from the virus. Safe from being sucked into the downward spiral of negativity. My prayer is that we all continue to see ourselves as residents of one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Remember that you are here by choice, not by chance. Try to make a difference wherever you can and reignite within yourself, that flame that feeds your very soul, uplifting you and giving you strength to see you through the next few difficult weeks.
I remain as always
In love and light
Yours in service
