The Quiet Power of Liminal Spaces: What Spiritual Growth Looks Like Between Chapters of Life

Spirit ConnectionJuly 23, 20260

Most people imagine transformation as a clear moment. A decision. A breakthrough. A beginning. But many of life’s deepest changes do not happen when something starts or ends. They happen in the space in between. That uncertain place after one identity no longer fits and before the next one feels real. That season where life feels suspended. Not broken. Not complete. These in-between periods are often known as liminal spaces. Spiritually, liminal spaces are places of transition. Moments where the old has loosened its grip, but the new has not fully arrived.

They can feel uncomfortable, confusing and deeply uncertain. Yet they are often where some of our most meaningful growth quietly unfolds.

What Is a Liminal Space?

The word liminal comes from the Latin word limen, meaning threshold. A liminal space is a threshold experience. It is the place between what was and what comes next. Examples of liminal seasons include:

• Leaving a job but not yet finding a new direction
• Ending a relationship and rediscovering yourself
• Recovering after burnout
• Moving home or changing identity
• Becoming a parent
• Experiencing grief or loss
• Questioning long-held beliefs
• Feeling called towards change without knowing why

Liminal spaces are not only external transitions. They often happen internally. You may look the same to others while feeling completely different inside.

Why Liminal Spaces Feel Uncomfortable

Human beings naturally seek certainty. We like clear answers, stable identities and predictable outcomes. Liminal spaces offer none of those things. Instead, they often bring:

• Ambiguity
• Waiting
• Emotional vulnerability
• Lack of clarity
• Loss of familiar structure

This uncertainty can feel unsettling. People often interpret liminal periods as signs that something is wrong. But spiritually speaking, uncertainty is not always a problem to solve. Sometimes it is part of the process.

The Pressure to Move On Too Quickly

Modern culture often values visible progress. We are encouraged to:

• Make decisions quickly
• Define ourselves clearly
• Stay productive
• Find answers immediately

As a result, many people rush through transitional periods. They try to fill uncertainty with action. Replace discomfort with certainty. Move into the next chapter before fully leaving the previous one. But liminal spaces cannot always be rushed. Some experiences require time to unfold. Growth is not always linear.

Why Spiritual Growth Often Happens in the In-Between

When familiar structures fall away, something interesting happens. We begin to notice ourselves differently.
Without old routines, roles or expectations, deeper questions emerge:

• Who am I without this?
• What actually matters to me?
• What am I becoming?
• What do I want now?

These questions can feel uncomfortable. But they also create space for honesty. Many spiritual traditions recognise periods of uncertainty as important phases of transformation. Not because uncertainty is enjoyable but because it creates conditions for awareness.

The Hidden Gifts of Liminal Seasons

Although liminal spaces rarely feel easy, they often contain unexpected opportunities.

1. They invite self-discovery
When familiar identities soften, there is room to rediscover yourself. You may realise:

• Your priorities have changed
• Your values are evolving
• Old definitions no longer fit

This can feel disorientating at first. But it also creates possibility.

2. They reveal what no longer belongs
Transitions often highlight what has become outdated. You may notice:

• Relationships that no longer align
• Expectations you have outgrown
• Habits that no longer support you

This awareness can be difficult but freeing.

3. They deepen trust
When certainty disappears, we often begin developing a different kind of confidence. Not confidence in outcomes.
Confidence in our ability to navigate change.

The Spiritual Experience of Not Knowing

Many people expect spiritual growth to feel inspiring and clear. Yet some of the most meaningful growth experiences begin with confusion. Periods of questioning. Moments where nothing feels certain. Spiritually, these seasons may invite us to develop qualities such as:

• Presence
• Patience
• Surrender
• Trust
• Curiosity

Not trust that everything will unfold perfectly. Trust that clarity does not always need to arrive immediately.

Signs You May Be in a Liminal Space

Liminal periods can be subtle. You may notice:

• Feeling emotionally unsettled without clear reason
• Loss of interest in old goals
• Increased reflection or introspection
• Feeling disconnected from previous versions of yourself
• Wanting change but not knowing what comes next
• Feeling simultaneously lost and hopeful

These experiences do not necessarily mean something is wrong. They may simply mean something is changing.

How to Move Through Liminal Spaces With More Ease

You cannot always remove uncertainty. But you can change how you relate to it.

1. Stop expecting immediate clarity
Not every question has an immediate answer. Some understanding develops gradually.

2. Notice what is ending
Transitions are not only about beginnings. Ask yourself: What am I being invited to release?

3. Stay connected to small daily anchors
During uncertain seasons, simple routines become valuable. Try:

• Journalling
• Walking
• Quiet reflection
• Mindful breathing
• Time in nature

These practices create steadiness.

4. Resist creating identity too quickly
You do not always need to define who you are becoming immediately. Allow space for exploration.

5. Pay attention to subtle shifts
Transformation often arrives quietly. Notice:

• New interests
• Different priorities
• Emerging desires
• Changes in perspective

Small shifts matter.

The Difference Between Being Stuck and Being in Transition

This is an important distinction. Being stuck often feels repetitive and closed. Liminal spaces usually contain movement, even if it is not obvious yet. Questions to ask:

• Am I avoiding change or adjusting to it?
• Does this season feel stagnant or unfinished?
• What am I learning here?

Transitions often feel uncertain because something is already moving internally.

Rituals for Navigating In-Between Seasons

Because liminal spaces can feel unstructured, simple rituals may help. You could try: Reflection questions

• What chapter is ending?
• What am I becoming more aware of?
• What do I need to stop forcing?

Symbolic actions
• Rearranging a space
• Writing a letter to your previous self
• Walking without a destination
• Creating intentional moments of stillness

These practices create meaning without forcing certainty.

Trusting the Threshold
One of the most challenging aspects of liminal spaces is that they rarely provide evidence that transformation is happening. You may feel uncertain while something important quietly develops beneath the surface.
Just because the next chapter is unclear does not mean nothing is unfolding. Seeds do not look like growth at first.
Neither do many transitions.

A Final Thought

Liminal spaces are rarely comfortable. They ask for patience when you want answers. Presence when you want certainty. Trust when you want guarantees. But they also offer something powerful. They invite you to become rather than perform. To listen rather than rush. To discover who you are when old definitions no longer apply. If you find yourself in an in-between season of life, remember: Not every pause is a setback. Not every uncertainty needs solving. Sometimes the threshold itself is where the deepest transformation begins.
