Signs from the Universe: How to Stay Open Without Losing Discernment

Spirit ConnectionOctober 29, 20260

Have you ever thought about someone you haven’t spoken to in years, only to receive a message from them later that day?

Have you noticed the same number appearing repeatedly during a period of change?

Have you been wrestling with a decision and then encountered a conversation, song, book or unexpected event that seemed strangely relevant?

Moments like these can stop us in our tracks.

We may think:

“Is this a sign?”

For some people, these experiences feel like meaningful guidance from the universe, a higher power or something beyond ordinary coincidence.

For others, they may simply be coincidences that the human mind naturally finds meaningful.

Perhaps there is room to hold both possibilities.

The spiritual journey does not require us to believe every unusual event has a supernatural explanation. Nor does staying grounded require us to dismiss every experience that feels meaningful.

The invitation is to remain open, curious and discerning.

What Do We Mean by a “Sign”?

A sign can mean different things to different people.

Some people describe signs as unexpected coincidences that seem personally meaningful.

Others may experience them through dreams, repeated symbols, numbers, encounters, phrases, songs or seemingly perfect timing.

Within spiritual traditions, these experiences may be interpreted as guidance, synchronicity, divine communication or a reminder to pay attention.

But there is an important distinction between saying:

“This experience felt meaningful to me,”

and:

“I know this was definitely a message from the universe.”

The first describes your experience.

The second makes a claim about its cause.

We may not always be able to know the difference.

That uncertainty does not make the experience meaningless.

Why Do We Notice Patterns?

Human beings are natural pattern-recognisers.

Our brains are constantly looking for connections between things. This ability is extremely useful. It helps us learn, recognise familiar situations and make sense of a complicated world.

But it also means we can sometimes perceive meaningful patterns in events that are unrelated.

For example, once you become interested in a particular car, you may suddenly notice that same model everywhere.

The cars probably did not suddenly become more common.

Your attention changed.

The same thing can happen with numbers, words, names or symbols.

Once something becomes personally significant, you are more likely to notice it.

This doesn’t mean your experience is imaginary.

You genuinely noticed the pattern.

The question is what meaning, if any, you choose to give it.

Synchronicity and Meaning

Psychologist Carl Jung used the term synchronicity to describe coincidences that appear meaningfully connected, even when there is no obvious causal connection between them.

For example, you might be thinking deeply about changing direction in your life and unexpectedly meet someone who has recently made the same kind of change.

The event may feel significant because of the meaning it has within your personal experience.

Whether such experiences have a spiritual source is a question different traditions answer in different ways.

Science can investigate coincidence, perception, attention and the psychological experience of meaning.

It cannot simply confirm that a particular coincidence was a message from the universe.

This is where discernment becomes important.

Intuition Is Not the Same as a Sign

It is also helpful to distinguish between intuition and what we interpret as a sign.

Intuition can involve a rapid sense of knowing or a feeling that emerges from information and patterns we may not consciously recognise.

Sometimes intuition can be useful.

But intuition is not infallible.

Fear can feel like intuition.

Desire can feel like intuition.

Past experiences can influence what feels immediately right or wrong.

Likewise, seeing a particular “sign” does not automatically tell you what you should do.

Imagine you are considering leaving your job and you repeatedly see messages about new beginnings.

It may feel significant.

But it doesn’t necessarily mean:

“Quit tomorrow.”

The experience could instead invite a question:

“Why is this idea resonating with me so strongly?”

That question takes you deeper.

The Danger of Confirmation Bias

One of the most useful concepts to understand when exploring signs is confirmation bias.

Confirmation bias is the tendency to notice, interpret or remember information in ways that support what we already believe.

Suppose you believe that a certain person is your soulmate.

You may notice every coincidence involving them.

A song reminds you of them.

You happen to see their name.

They message you when you were thinking about them.

Each event can feel like confirmation.

But you may overlook all the times nothing meaningful happened.

This doesn’t mean the relationship is not important.

It simply means that meaningful experiences need to be considered alongside the broader picture.

A useful question is:

“Would I interpret this event in the same way if I wanted a different outcome?”

That question can reveal a great deal.

Stay Open, But Don’t Hand Over Your Power

Spiritual exploration becomes unhealthy when every decision is handed over to signs.

“The universe told me to do it.”

“I saw a number, so I know this relationship is meant to be.”

“That coincidence proves this is the right decision.”

Your life still requires your judgement.

A sign, if you choose to interpret it spiritually, can be an invitation to reflect.

It does not have to become an instruction.

This is especially important when decisions involve health, finances, relationships, safety or major life changes.

You can honour your spiritual experience while also gathering information, considering consequences and seeking appropriate advice.

Spirituality and practical wisdom do not need to compete.

Ask Better Questions

When something feels like a sign, instead of immediately asking:

“What is the universe trying to tell me?”

try asking:

“What does this bring up in me?”

Perhaps you feel hopeful.

Perhaps you feel afraid.

Perhaps you feel excited about a possibility you have been avoiding.

Perhaps the coincidence reminds you of something you already knew but were reluctant to acknowledge.

The event itself may not contain a universal instruction.

Its significance may come from what it reveals about you.

This is a powerful form of spiritual self-awareness.

Keep a Signs and Intuition Journal

If you frequently experience what feel like signs, try keeping a journal.

Write down:

What happened?

Describe the event without adding an interpretation.

What did I think it meant?

Record your interpretation.

What was I feeling at the time?

Notice your emotional state.

What did I want to be true?

This is particularly important.

What happened afterwards?

Over time, you may begin to notice patterns.

Perhaps certain experiences genuinely help you reflect.

Perhaps you discover that your interpretations are often influenced by fear or wishful thinking.

Perhaps you become better at distinguishing intuition from anxiety.

The purpose isn’t to prove or disprove spirituality.

It is to develop discernment.

Discernment Is a Spiritual Skill

Discernment means learning to distinguish between different possibilities.

It asks us to slow down rather than immediately believe or reject.

When something unusual happens, you can hold several possibilities at once:

“Maybe this was simply coincidence.”

“Maybe my attention was drawn to it because it is already important to me.”

“Maybe there is something here worth reflecting on.”

“I don’t know yet.”

That last answer is surprisingly powerful.

I don’t know yet.

You do not have to force certainty.

Spiritual maturity can include the ability to live comfortably with mystery.

Signs Should Not Replace Reality

A meaningful coincidence should never require you to ignore obvious reality.

If someone repeatedly treats you with disrespect, a string of “signs” does not make the relationship healthy.

If something is financially unsustainable, seeing repeated numbers does not change the mathematics.

If you are experiencing a serious health concern, a spiritual interpretation should not replace appropriate medical care.

Being spiritually open does not mean becoming less grounded.

In fact, genuine discernment may make you more grounded.

You can remain open to mystery while keeping your feet firmly on the ground.

What If the Sign Means Something to You?

Perhaps the most balanced approach is to recognise that meaning can exist even when certainty does not.

A coincidence may not have been deliberately sent to you.

But it may still make you pause.

It may encourage you to reflect.

It may remind you of something important.

It may help you notice a possibility you had been avoiding.

It may become part of your personal spiritual story.

You don’t necessarily need to prove that the universe sent it.

You can simply ask:

“What does this experience invite me to notice?”

That question leaves room for spirituality without abandoning discernment.

A More Conscious Way of Looking for Signs

Instead of constantly searching for signs, try becoming more attentive to life itself.

Be present.

Listen carefully.

Notice your emotions.

Pay attention to recurring themes.

Question your assumptions.

Trust your intuition when appropriate, but test it against reality.

And remain willing to be wrong.

You may discover that the greatest “signs” are not dramatic coincidences at all.

Perhaps they are the quiet moments when you realise something about yourself.

The relationship that shows you where your boundaries need strengthening.

The recurring feeling that tells you something needs attention.

The opportunity that aligns with your values.

The difficult experience that reveals a pattern you are ready to change.

The question that keeps returning until you finally listen.

Stay Curious, Stay Grounded

Spirituality does not have to mean choosing between complete belief and complete scepticism.

There is another way.

Curiosity.

You can say:

“That was interesting.”

“That felt meaningful.”

“I wonder what I can learn from this.”

And then remain open to other explanations.

You can explore the mystery without pretending to have all the answers.

Perhaps the deeper lesson is not to become someone who constantly searches the universe for messages.

Perhaps it is to become someone who is sufficiently present to notice life, sufficiently open to wonder, and sufficiently grounded to think carefully about what those experiences might mean.

The next time something feels like a sign, pause.

Take a breath.

Notice what you feel.

Ask what it brings up in you.

Look at the situation from more than one perspective.

Then ask the most important question:

“What would wisdom look like here?”

You may not receive an immediate answer.

And that’s okay.

Sometimes the most spiritually mature response is not certainty.

It is curiosity without conclusion.
