There’s a beautiful song by Maroon 5 called Memories. Some of the lyrics go like this :
Here’s to the ones that we got
Cheers to the wish you were here, but you’re not
‘Cause the drinks bring back all the memories
Of everything we’ve been through
Toast to the ones here today
Toast to the ones that we lost on the way
‘Cause the drinks bring back all the memories
And the memories bring back, memories bring back you
There’s a time that I remember, when I did not know no pain
When I believed in forever, and everything would stay the same
Now my heart feel like December when somebody say your name
‘Cause I can’t reach out to call you, but I know I will one day, yeah
Everybody hurts sometimes
Everybody hurts someday, ayy ayy
But everything gon’ be alright
Go and raise a glass and say, ayy
Here’s to the ones that we got
Cheers to the wish you were here, but you’re not
‘Cause the drinks bring back all the memories
Of everything we’ve been through
Toast to the ones here today
Toast to the ones that we lost on the way
‘Cause the drinks bring back all the memories
And the memories bring back, memories bring back you.
Such haunting words to remind us to create wonderful memories while we’re given the opportunity to do so here on the earth. Time passes by so quickly and we spend so much of it wanting to be right, wanting to be the winner, feeling resentful and getting on our high horses. Little do we realise that when we look back on our lives, we will see that this was just time wasted.
Time wasted is just a tragedy. It seems so silly that we would want to spend time being negative towards each other. Imagine if you were given the awful news that someone you love only has a short while to live, or that you have a short while to live. What would you do? How would you live your life going forward? I have no doubt that you would want to make the absolute most of every moment of every day. So why not start now?
We are creating memories every day. Some of them good, some of them bad, some of them really memorable and some we would prefer to forget. What would you like your memory book to look like 20, 30, 40 years down the line?
It’s about living your best life. Living your life with love and gratitude in your heart. Living your life being mindful. Mindful of what you say. Mindful of what you think. Mindful of what you do. Mindful of how you conduct yourself every day in every way.
It’s about saying cheers to one’s that we got, because we’re so grateful we have them. It’s of course not forgetting about those that are not. Those who we lost along the way. But it’s about making sure that we create memories that reside deep within our hearts, that will sustain us when those who got are no longer here with us.
We all believe in forever, and we all think everything will stay the same. But, in the blink of an eye, in the space of a heartbeat, our lives could be changed forever. We could be walking one path and that path could be ripped out from under us.
Cherish those who you have. Cherish your own life too. Make sure that when you raise a glass, it’s to the ones that you have and live your life where your love is all inclusive of everyone that you chose to live this life with. Relationships are hard. They require a lot of work. But in the end it’s all worth it. Please don’t wait till the end to realise how precious your relationships are.
