Ever been told that you couldn’t succeed at something, that you couldn’t achieve a goal; or were labelled a certain way as a kid and that little voice still whispers in your ear to this day? What about the dreaded diagnosis from your healthcare professional, who very clinically informs you that you have a limited amount of time to live?
Welcome to the world of labels, opinions, prognosis, diagnosis and judgements. Nowadays everywhere you turn you are being bombarded with opinions and information. And if you take enough notice, you will see that for every bit of advice and educated informative opinion, there will also be a contradictory one. For every Instagram expert there is an equal but opposite TikTok guide. Experts are popping up all over the place and it seems the shinier and brighter the packaging the bigger the impact, but is this really the way to live?
This excerpt from Kitchen Table Wisdom by Rachel Remen really spoke to me. I literally felt my shoulders drop – without realising I’d been walking around with them scrunched and tensed, my brain softened and I let myself take a deep breath and break from the shallow breathing we all are guilty of.
“We may need to take our labels and our experts far more lightly. Some years ago, … [I heard of] a farmer who had done exceptionally well despite a dire prognosis. He had taken the same attitude toward his physician’s prognosis that he took toward the words of the government soil experts who analysed his fields. As they were educated men, he respected them and listened carefully as they showed him the findings of their tests and told him that the corn would not grow in this field. He valued their opinions. But, as he said, ‘A lot of the time, the corn grows anyway.’
Can we just stop for a minute and take that in. The corn grows anyway. If we look back over the span of our lives, no matter how many decades, we may find that we too have experienced miraculous times where things just worked out, or carried on – even though they shouldn’t have, and probably without our pushing and forcing them to.
Another great example I’ve personally experienced with clients and family members is when they have been told they cannot conceive a baby, there is no chance of a biological birth. Then lo and behold, with the passage of time and all the factors – known and unknown – in place, pregnancy happens naturally and multiple children are born into the family.
What would it be like if more people allowed for the presence of the unknown, and accepted the words of experts as Rachel puts it, a little more lightly. While we may think we have the map in front of us, we never quite know when the compass will spin and turn things around.
To be clear, sometimes the experts and professionals are correct in their estimations, and I am not negating their knowledge, but we can never ever disregard the Divine omniscient blueprint and presence in our lives. There is surely always an exception. Always an extra day or month we can add to the prognosis, surely a way to shake off the labels we have been incorrectly defining ourselves by, for possibly our whole lives.
Given the nature of life, there may be no security, but only adventure. And though most of us signed up for this adventure unconsciously – here we all are. Though we all think we know the plan and know what we are doing, I think we have allowed ourselves to stay asleep and hand our power over to others to frequently. We have let social media and it’s very convincing ‘influencers’ creep in and influence our lives and psyches. Yes, there are some wonderful and exciting things to learn, but we do not have to listen to every single bit of advice or feed out there.
With all our striving to be living our best lives and documenting them at every turn, we have also never before experienced a culture of people so desperately unhappy, dissatisfied, depressed and diseased. The levels of struggle, stress, mental health issues and physical ailments is rife on our planet.
While we need all the help we can get, most days we do not need more ‘experts’ telling us what to do and making us feel ‘not enough’ as we are. We don’t need more labels; we need more love.
We need more sincere hearts, kind words, open arms, healing spaces, loving listeners, wise counsel and nourishing living environments. At some point we have to drop all the external chatter and distraction and search the fabric of our beings for what our true identity is, with or without being told who we are by others.
It is time to start living in a world where we start loving our inner influencer. And believing in a world where the corn grows anyway.
