A beginning of a new year and no time like the present to declutter your life. Declutter is described in the Oxford dictionary as : “remove unnecessary items from (an untidy or overcrowded place).”
It might sound like an easy thing to do but, when you get down to it, decluttering can become very overwhelming. From the human physical aspect, when we think about decluttering, we automatically think about cleaning up our living space. But decluttering goes much deeper than that.
As human beings we all have so many emotionally-charged issues that we are constantly working through. Sometimes these are not so big and we can work through them easily. This would be where you perhaps got irritated with someone ‘stealing’ your parking bay. Easy enough to get over – just find another parking bay, have a little hissy-fit (hopefully to yourself) and go about your day. However, there are other issues that are far more fraught with emotion and it’s no secret that when we don’t work through these emotions, they are going to show up in our later life. And one way to identify that they are showing up is when our lives become cluttered.
I’m referring to our lives being cluttered in the physical sense as well as the emotional or mental sense. What has so often been found is that say where someone becomes a hoarder, when delving deep into the reasons why this has happened to them, almost every time, there has been some traumatic event that that person hasn’t worked through whcih is now manifesting as a hoarding problem. From a mental perspective, when we have emotional moments that run through our heads in a non-stop fashion, our minds become cluttered and we are unable to make clearly thought-through decisions, we’re unable to see our situation clearly.
Clearing up the clutter whether it be physical or mental, is to breathe life back into your life. It isn’t easy. It takes time. It takes dedication. It requires that we dig deep within. It requires that we be prepared to not like what we find. It requires that we have a determination within us to fix what we don’t like. It requires that we want more for ourselves. But, when the decision is made, and the process is started, it gets easier as you work through each aspect of your life, in small easy to handle chunks. And when you come out on the other side, it’s very much worth the effort.
Of course, it can’t be done on your own. Finding someone to help is almost as important as actually doing the decluttering. From a physical or material perspective, we sometimes attach value to certain items we have in our possession. That’s not a bad thing, except when those items become so many that they clutter our space and they cause chaos and problems in our life. Detachment is a great teaching of most religions. When you consider the benefits, it makes so much sense.
So today, as you read this article, decide how much clutter you have in your life and ask yourself, what can you do to declutter. Sometimes it’s as simple as rolling up your sleeves and cleaning out everything that you no longer use in your home. Find someone who can benefit from them. Sell them or give them away, it doesn’t really matter. Then look at yourself and see what it is that clutters your mind. Are you someone that procrastinates at every turn? Are you someone who will find any excuse to not actually get down to doing something? Are you someone who can’t forgive, who can’t forget, who can’t let go of past hurts and past disappointments? Consider why it is that you’re holding onto them. Consider if you’re actually deriving any benefit from holding onto them. And then make your decision, because without a doubt you are not deriving benefit at all.
Carrying around a weight on your shoulders and negative thoughts in your head, creates blockages in your life. Know that your thoughts are more powerful than your deeds. Be wary of the thoughts that you send into the universe. Know that the law of cause and effect, will without a shadow of doubt, send those exact thoughts back to you. So be very wary of how you perceive yourself or how you perceive your world for that is what you are manifesting daily.
Make this year your year for decluttering. Invest in yourself, it is your birthright. Put yourself on the top of the pile this year. Know that it is possible for you to create your best year and to live your best life. It’s all entirely up to you.
